More and more travellers are flocking to Airbnb instead of traditional hotels/hostels. I am frequently going to new destinations and embracing new cultures, and have stayed in hotels, hostels, resorts, and Airbnbs. Having tried it all, I can confidently say Airbnb is the best type of accommodation. Let’s have a look at 5 reasons why I backpack on Airbnb.

1) Looking for cheaper accommodation?

This is, obviously, dependent on your price range. I have stayed in a private room near the city center of Madrid for $23 per night (for two people). On the other hand, my family of four traveled to St. Louis and spent $100 per night on an entire home. Yet, both places were beautiful apartments with wonderful hosts!

As a budget traveler, I look to get the best price for location, amenities and experience.

On Airbnb, travelers are able to put in their criteria for what they want during their stay; this can include price range, a private room or entire home, and certain amenities (wifi, washing machine, heating, TV, etc.). For example, we like to cook at home, so we never book an Airbnb without a kitchen.

You can always find a great Airbnb that will beat the price of any hotel or hostel.

2) For people of all price ranges

So, we know that it is cheaper than traditional hotels, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as good (or even better).

While looking for your Airbnb, you can put in your price range and choose from those options. A great thing about Airbnb is that it always has something to offer!

You can find a private room for as low as $10-$40 per night, or luxurious homes from $100-$1,000+ per night. If you’re a budget traveller like me, then those affordable homes are a dream come true!

In my experience, regardless of the price, the cleanliness and quality of the place and host are always consistent. It’s up to you to decide what you’re looking for.

3) Hosts strive to please their guests

Hosts want their guests to feel welcome and have a great experiences in their cities.

During my travels, every host has done whatever they could to make our stay the best it could be. This can be from making sure you have enough pillows and blankets, to providing snacks and drinks. Our host gave us some great local beers to try in London. In Nuremberg: (more) beer, wine, and snacks. In St. Louis: food and snacks. In Rome: food and candies.

Small gestures like these truly make you feel welcome in their home.

Looking to find things to see and do? Trying to find a nice place to eat? Well, hosts always provide the best advice.

I make an effort to connect with my host and even go for a drink or a bite to eat. It’s a great way to gain new friends from all around the world.

4) Stay in unique places

This one is pretty self explanatory. Occasionally, I prefer to get out of the city and experience something different. This is where Airbnb can’t be beat.

Ever dreamed of spending the night in a castle? What about staying in a treehouse, or even a private island? With Airbnb your dream of staying in these unique places can come true.

This may not be for the person on a tight budget, but if you’re willing to spend a little extra then this fantasy-type of accommodation is for you. Keep in mind that prices can vary from country to country, so depending on where you’re going, this may be an option.

5) Get a feel of Local life

Let’s face it, most affordable hotels/hostels are for sleeping. There is nothing special about them. You check in, thank the front desk, and go to your room.

This is not the case with Airbnb. Throughout my time using the site, I have mostly stayed in residential areas. The great thing about this is that you are away from all of the tourism, which means: local food, better prices, and local people.

Personally, I think that this is one the best things about Airbnb because it creates a better atmosphere. Staying in an Airbnb can give you insight to local life, and what it’s like to live there.

Airbnb is a great way to travel, and provides everything one could want at any price range, and more. Even for backpackers (like me), Airbnb and so many wonderful hosts are able to offer The Perfect Stay.
